Investor Update Standard
What goes in an update, so that writing one is an hour and not a weekend. The standard exists mostly to stop the good months from being long and the bad months from being late.
Cadence, and who it goes to. The date it lands each month, and the list. Say what happens when there is nothing good to report — that is the month the standard is for.
What every update contains. The same sections in the same order, every time: the number that matters, what shipped, what you learned, what you need. A reader who can find your ask in four seconds will answer it.
The numbers we always report. Name them and their definition. A metric whose definition moves is worse than no metric, because it looks like progress.
How we say the hard part. Plainly, near the top, with what you are doing about it. Investors forgive bad news; what they remember is having heard it from somebody else first.
Who reviews before it goes. One person, and the two things they check: that every number matches its source, and that nothing here would surprise somebody who has read all year.
